What the BMS Does

The Battery Management System (BMS) is an internal circuit that monitors battery cells and disconnects them if unsafe conditions are detected, such as overheating, excessive current draw, or short circuits. When the BMS disconnects, the battery appears completely dead even if the cells still hold charge.

Symptoms of a Locked BMS

- Hook does not beep when the battery is inserted.

- Battery output reads 0V on a multimeter, despite cells potentially holding charge.

- Battery LED indicators show charge when the button is pressed, but the hook does not respond.

Before assuming a locked BMS, test the battery in a known-good hook and test a known-good battery in the affected hook. If the battery works in a different hook, the problem is with the hook, not the BMS.

How to Recover a Locked BMS

Step 1 - Connect to the official Elebia charger for 30 seconds.

Connect the battery to an official Elebia charger and leave it connected for at least 30 seconds. Remove the battery and immediately test it in the hook. This brief charging pulse often reactivates the BMS. If the battery does not respond, extend charging up to 48 hours, particularly for batteries that have been deeply discharged or stored for several months.

Always use the official Elebia charger. Third-party chargers can complicate diagnosis.

Step 2 - Verify the charger is functioning correctly.

Before concluding the battery is at fault, check the charger:

- The charger LED should change from green to red when a battery is connected.

- Measure the charger output voltage with a multimeter and confirm it matches the battery's rated voltage.

- Test the charger with a known-good battery.

If the charger does not output voltage or the LED does not change, replace the charger before assuming the battery is defective.

When the BMS Cannot Be Recovered

Replace the battery if:

- The battery does not respond after 48 hours on the charger.

- The multimeter reads 0V, indicating fully depleted cells.

- There are signs of physical damage: swelling, deformation, burn marks, or a burning smell.
